My mother-in-law got scammed this week. Not a joke. True story.
Not for a huge amount of money, but the humiliation, the anger, the confusion? Those were very real. And honestly, the whole thing frustrated me, because when I looked at the scam itself, it was loaded with red flags.
We're talking about our Prime Minister, Albo himself, apparently promoting a high-yield investment scheme. Now, like him or not, there is no version of reality where Anthony Albanese demeans the office of the PM to spruik a commercial product. And the returns being promised? Massive. Guaranteed. Easy money.
Yeah, right.
Thankfully, her bank flagged the transaction as suspicious and shut it down before serious damage was done. But the hit to her confidence? That was harder to stop.
So how does a smart, capable woman still pick up the phone, call the number, and hand over her card details?
That's what really got me thinking, because despite being obviously fake, this scam works on thousands of people. Even in the small town where we live, the bank teller told us others had been into the branch having been caught by the same scam.
Why? Why did it work so well?
Because it's targeting people’s very real pain, and offering a solution. And that’s a powerful combination.
Right now, a lot of Aussies are hurting financially. Older people feel squeezed by a system that seems to exploit them. Young families watching their bills climb while the Reserve Bank keeps hiking rates. People are stressed, stretched, and quietly desperate for a way out.
And then, suddenly, on their screen appears salvation. A solution. An easy win, allegedly backed by one of the most powerful people in the country.
When human beings are experiencing genuine pain, they want to believe there’s a solution. They need to believe it. And in that moment, they'll overlook almost anything to hold onto a little hope.
All a scam needs to do is hit the emotional trigger first (the promise of quick cash), then give people a logical justification to act (Albo says so, it must be legit). Rational brain has left the chat! Game over.
So what does this mean for you, and growing your sales?
I'm not saying scam your clients. If you've followed Orbit for more than five minutes, you know that's the opposite of what we stand for. We don't do false promises. We don't do smoke and mirrors.
What I am saying is this: if people will hand over their card details for something that's obviously fake, imagine what a legitimate business, with a real solution, real results, and real testimonials could achieve.
You don't need to manufacture urgency. You don't need to exaggerate. You just need to genuinely understand what your customers are struggling with right now, and speak directly to that.
Then show them a quick win.
It doesn’t need to be the whole transformation, just a taste of what's possible early on.
If you're a personal trainer, you're probably not going to deliver dramatic weight loss in the first two sessions. But you can deliver a genuine boost in energy and a feeling of momentum. Lead with that.
If you're an accountant, a complete financial overhaul takes time. But you can find where profits are leaking in the first week. Unnecessary subscriptions, slow-paying clients, inefficiencies hiding in plain sight. That's your quick win.
People buy on emotion and justify with logic. Give them both, honestly, and you'll be surprised how many say yes.
The process that actually works to get more clients.
- Understand what your customers are struggling with right now.
- Clearly articulate how you solve it.
- Show them a process that makes sense and
- Back it up with real results and testimonials.
- Then stay consistent until they simply can't ignore you anymore.
That's not magic. It's not complicated. It's just a system. Our system. And it works to grow businesses in any industry.
Don't take our word for it.
