FAQ

Do I really need a marketing agency or can I do it myself?

You can do your own marketing. Plenty of business owners start that way. In fact, if you’re just starting out, it’s best if you do take care of your own advertising until you’ve got some sales under your belt, and proven that you have something people are willing to pay for. If you haven’t proven your offer, paying someone to run your ads might just be a fay to burn cash even faster. If you’re a little more established, the real question is whether doing your own ads it’s the best use of your time, and whether you’re getting the same results as someone who does this for a living.

Marketing today isn’t just posting on social media or running the occasional ad. It requires strategy, testing, data analysis, copywriting, design, and ongoing optimisation. Most business owners don’t have the time (or desire) to master all of that.

A good agency doesn’t just “do marketing”it accelerates growth by avoiding costly mistakes and getting results faster. If your time is better spent running your business, bringing in experts is usually the smarter move.

Why isn’t my current marketing generating leads?

In most cases, it comes down to one of three things:

1.     You’re targeting the wrong audience

2.     Your messaging isn’tgetting people’s attention

3.     What you’reoffering and the way you’re talking about itisn’t compelling enough

Marketing doesn’t fail because of the platform, or some lack of the latest viral hack, it fails because of a misalignment between what your clients want, and what you’re saying in your ads.

If your messaging doesn’t reflect what your customers actually want, need, or are worried about, they won’t even stop to read your ads. If your offer doesn’t feel like a no-brainer, they won’t act.

When those three elements line up: audience, message and offer, you’ll get leads every time. Check out this blog for how to fix your marketing when it’s not getting leads. https://www.orbitmarketing.com.au/blog/so-your-ads-are-not-working-what-now/

How do I know if my marketing is working?

Good marketing should be measurable.

At a minimum, you should know:

·       How many leads you’re generating

·       Where those leads are coming from

·       What it costs to generate a lead

·       How many of those leads turn into customers

If you don’t have clear visibility on those numbers, you’re guessing, and guessing is expensive.

Effective marketing isn’t about “feeling busy” or “getting likes.” It’s about predictable, trackable growth.

What’s the biggest mistake small businesses make with marketing?

Trying to sell too soon.

Most businesses jump straight to “Buy now” messaging before building trust. But people don’t buy from businesses they don’t trust, especially when things are a bit tight. And especially when you’re selling a service. With a physical product people can see, feel and touch what they’re buying, so they don’t need as much trust. As a service based business, people need to really trust you before they buy from you.

The businesses that win focus on:

·       Understanding their audience deeply. This is the cornerstone of all good marketing.

·       Providing value first by giving good advice, tips and tools people can use.

·       Building trust consistently through email and SMS, consistent ads and always showing up with passion.

Then, when they make an offer, it converts.

How much does marketing cost for a small business in Australia?

It depends on your goals, your industry, and how aggressive you want to be with growth.

Most small businesses invest anywhere from $2,500 to $10,000+ per month across strategy, ads, and execution. In some industries, or with a really agressive growth strategy it could be even more. Talk to your agency for advice.

But the better question is:

👉 What’s the return?

If you spend $3,000 and generate $15,000 in revenue, the cost becomes irrelevant.

Marketing shouldn’t be viewed as an expense, t’s an investment in growth.

How long does it take to see results from marketing?

Some results can come quickly, especially with paid ads.

You might see:

·       Traffic within days

·       Leads within weeks

·       Consistent growth within 60–90 days

That said, the biggest wins come from consistency over time, and doing the basics such as building an email and SMS list.

The longer you build trust, refine your messaging, and optimise campaigns, the better your results become. The effects are cumulative and the best time to start (if you haven’t already) is now.

What if I spend money on ads and it doesn’t work?

That’s a valid concern, and it usually comes from past experience.

When ads “don’t work,” it’s rarely because advertising itself is broken. It’s because:

·       The targeting was off

·       The messaging didn’t connect

·       The offer wasn’t strong enough

·       You gave up too soon

Ads are just amplification. If the underlying strategy isn’t right, ads will expose that quickly.

The key is testing, refining, and improving, not switching ads off at the first sign of resistance.

Ads work for millions of businesses every day. Every platform work, whether it’s social media, TV, Google, Out of Home, direct marketing... the list is endless. They all work if they’re used correctly, at the right part of the advertiisng process and to reach the right audience.

But you need to be realistic. Advertising rarely gets sales on day 1. You’ll need to be consistent and work with your agency.

What does a digital marketing agency actually do?

Great question. There is so much variation in what agencies do (and don’t do) A good agency does three things:

1.     Strategy – understanding your audience, positioning, and goals, then creating a plan specifically to achieve those goals.

2.     Execution – running ads, creating content, building sales funnels, booking traditional media like TV and radio, if they’re part of the plan.

3.     Optimisation – analysing performance, making changes, updating ads and targeting and improving results over time. Ads ALWAYS work it’s just a matter of when.

It’s not just about “running ads.”

It’s about using tried and tested techniques to build a system that consistently brings in leads and turns them into customers.

Which online platform is best for my business?

It depends on where your customers spend time, how ready they are to buy,  and how they make buying decisions. Knowing this intimately, again, is central to your success. If you don’t know the people your want as customers almost better than they know themselves, you have some work to do.

·       Google Ads – best for high-intent searches (people actively looking) for what you’re selling. This works best when they already know and have trust in your brand. If the first time someone comes into contact with you is when they’re looking for which brand to buy, they’realmost certainly going with someone they DO already know, even if they only know them from seeing their social media content.

·       Meta (Facebook/Instagram) – great for increasing your visibility, brand awareness and lead generation

·       LinkedIn – ideal for B2B and professional services. Good for building authority but it can be hard to reach a local audience.

·       TikTok.It’s changing. TikTok is no longer only for teenage girls and pervy old men. It’s growing fast and reaches a wide range of engaged people. The downside is that it’s clunky to advertise still, andneeds a well structured plan for creating good content every week.

There’s no one-size-fits-all answer.

The right platform is the one your audience is already using, and where your message resonates.

Should I still invest in marketing during a cost of living crisis?

Short answer: yes, even more than during good times. but do it smartly. Not sure how, check out our blog https://www.orbitmarketing.com.au/blog/strategies-for-growth-in-a-tough-market/

When markets tighten, most businesses pull back.

That creates opportunity.

Customers are still buying, they’re just more cautious. If you adjust your messaging, build trust, and reduce risk, you can capture market share while others go quiet.

How do I get leads when people are spending less?

You focus on reducing risk and increasing trust.

That means:

·       Stronger messaging

·       More value upfront

·       Lower-barrier offers

·       Find the friction points that stop people from buying, and remove them.

People don’t stop buying in tough times. They just need more confidence and security before they do.

Why is building an email list so important?

Because it’s an asset you own.

Social media platforms can change. Accounts can get shut down. Ad costs can rise. Algorithms can shift overnight.

Your email list?

That’s yours.

It gives you direct access to people who already know you, trust you, and are far more likely to buy. It allows you to build real trust with people by constantly showing up for them, and demonstrating your expertise.

Is email marketing still effective?

More than ever. In fact with an average ROI of almost 40:1 it’s been the most effective marketing platform for many years.

While everyone is fighting for attention on social media, email gives you a direct line to your audience.

When done properly, with value, consistency, and relevance, it becomes one of your highest ROI channels.
