SEO Demystified: What It Is, Why It Matters, and How It Powers Business Growth

Things seem to happen in twos for me. Just this week I’ve had two people ask me about SEO. Specifically, do they need to invest more and have an SEO strategy if they’re getting results from their paid ads.

If you’re a business owner who’s ever asked, “Do I really need SEO?” — the answer is a 100% YES. Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) isn’t just a buzzword. It’s a foundational piece of your digital marketing strategy that helps your business get found, build trust, and drive consistent, high-quality leads. Consistent and ongoing being the key here.

What is SEO?

SEO stands for Search Engine Optimisation. It’s the practice of improving your website and online presence so that your business shows up when people search for what you offer on the search engines like Google, Yahoo etc. And now, when the search using AI tools like Bard, ChatGPT and so on. But more on that further down the page.

Whether someone Googles “plumber near me” or “best wedding photographer in Brisbane,” SEO determines whether your business appears on page 1 or gets lost in the digital wilderness.

How Does SEO Work?

Google and other search engines use algorithms to rank websites based on relevance, trustworthiness, and user experience. SEO involves optimising for those signals so your site rises to the top.

There are three main pillars:

  1. Technical SEO: Making sure your website loads fast, is mobile-friendly, and is crawlable by search engines.
  2. On-Page SEO: Creating content that answers your customers’ questions, includes keywords they’re searching for and engages them to keep them on the page longer.
  3. Off-Page SEO: Building authority through backlinks, social signals, and consistent business listings across the web.

Why SEO is Crucial for Business Growth

Here’s the kicker: 93% of online experiences start with a search engine. If you’re not showing up when people are searching, you’re invisible.

SEO helps you:

  • Get Found by people actively looking for your services
  • Build Trust with customers (people trust Google rankings)
  • Drive Organic Traffic without paying for every click
  • Outrank Competitors and establish local dominance

Unlike paid ads that stop the second you pause your budget, SEO keeps delivering long after the work is done.

What SEO Can’t Do

SEO is powerful, but it’s not magic. Here are a few things it can’t do:

  • Deliver instant results – it can take months to climb rankings, especially in competitive markets.
  • Guarantee top positions – Google’s algorithm is constantly evolving, and results can fluctuate. Plus everyone else is optimising their pages too.
  • Replace great branding and customer service – SEO brings people in, but your business needs to close the deal

It’s also not a set-and-forget task. SEO requires consistent content, link-building, and optimisation to maintain momentum. Like ALL marketing activities, consistency is the key.

Where SEO Fits in Your Marketing Mix

SEO is your long game. It’s the bedrock of a strong online presence and works best when paired with:

  • Google Ads: Fast results while your SEO gains traction
  • Meta Ads: Retargeting visitors and building brand awareness
  • Content Marketing: Blogs, videos, and resources that boost SEO and nurture leads
  • Email Marketing: Convert organic traffic into loyal customers

How SEO and Paid Ads Work Together

Think of SEO and paid ads as the ultimate tag team. SEO builds long-term visibility, while paid ads deliver instant traffic and data you can use to refine your organic strategy.

Paid ads can:

  • Test which keywords convert best.
  • Drive traffic to high-value content or landing pages.
  • Fill gaps in SEO coverage for ultra-competitive terms.

Together, they create a full-funnel marketing engine that captures both ready-to-buy and researching customers.

What is a Google Business Profile (GBP)?

Google Business Profile (formerly Google My Business) is a free listing that helps your business show up in local search results, especially on Google Maps and the “local pack” that appears for nearby searches. Often referred to as Local SEO.

Your GBP includes your business name, location, phone number, hours, reviews, photos, and more. It’s a direct line between you and local customers actively searching for what you do.

Why your Google Business Profile Matters

For local businesses, your Google Business Profile is just as important as your website:

  • It boosts visibility in local searches and map results.
  • It builds credibility through reviews and up-to-date info.
  • It drives calls, bookings, and foot traffic directly from search.

Unlike traditional SEO which affects your website ranking, GBP is about dominating local intent and making it easy for people to contact or visit you.

How to Optimise Your GBP for Growth

  • Claim and verify your listing.
  • Use accurate, consistent NAP (Name, Address, Phone) across the web.
  • Add quality photos of your team, work, and premises.
  • Encourage and respond to reviews
  • Post updates, offers, and events regularly.
  • Fill out every section, including services and FAQs

An optimised GBP profile increases your chances of showing up in the coveted 3-pack — that top section of local results that drives the most clicks and calls.

The Rise of GEO: Generative Engine Optimisation

As AI tools like ChatGPT, Bard, and Perplexity change how people discover information, we’re entering the era of GEO: Generative Engine Optimisation.

As well as typing into Google, users are asking questions to AI tools and getting summarised answers. They’re using text and voice input. GEO is about optimising your content so these engines pull your brand, insights, and services into those answers. More and more, this is becoming one of the cornerstones of a complete marketing system.

Why GEO matters:

  • Early adopter advantage. Few businesses are doing it well.
  • Brand visibility in new discovery channels. Brands that show up in these channels are perceived to me more innovative and desirable to work with or buy from.
  • Future-proofing your content strategy. Start optimising for AI-driven search now, and avoid having to do even more work to catch up later on.

How to prepare:

  • Create helpful, detailed content that answers specific questions.
  • Use natural language and focus on clarity.
  • Add structured data (schema) to help machines understand your site.
  • Build topical authority by covering subjects in-depth.

GEO won’t replace SEO — it’s the next evolution. Smart marketers will do both to stay ahead. We’ll be doing a lot more on GEO in the coming weeks so stand by!
